The latest edition of the World Darts Championship is already in full swing, with the likes of Michael van Gerwen and Peter Wright battling it out for the biggest prize in the sport. Van Gerwen breezed into the second round with a comfortable victory over Keane Barry on day five, while there was also a major upset as James Wade was sent crashing out of the tournament.

Peter Wright will begin his quest for a third title later today when he goes up against Jim Williams in the evening session at Alexandra Palace. He will become the oldest-ever champion if he manages to win the top prize, which would also see him emerge as the most decorated Scottish player by going beyond the two crowns won by Jocky Wilson and Gary Anderson.

Meanwhile, reigning champion Michael Smith is still going strong after edging out Kevin Doets in their second-round meeting last week. He will be hoping to become the first player to secure back-to-back titles since Anderson defeated Phil Taylor and Adrian Lewis to claim victory in the 2015 and 2016 finals.

Van Gerwen terrorised by wasp

Michael van Gerwen became the latest player to have a run-in with the infamous Ally Pally wasp during his victory over Keane Barry.

Wasps have gained an iconic status at the World Darts Championship over the years, with the flying insects often guilty of terrorising players during matches.

Van Gerwen was not deterred on this occasion, though, as he breezed to a 3-0 triumph over Barry without too much difficulty.
